The Reader

How do you react to the intense focus on the physical relationship between Michael and Hanna in Part One of The Reader?

  1. I react quite strongly to the relationship as it is very graphic and disturbing. I think it has a vital role in the book as it provides depth and insight into the relationship between Michael and Hanna.

  4. Yes. Very "disturbing"...

  5. The movie was repulsive. The writer seems to have a bit of sexual tension while writing this part of the novel.

  6. The EXTREMELY explicit scenes and focus really show the passion and importance of the affair in the novel.

  8. I think it adds depth into the book and provides nessassry information about the relationship about Hannah and Michael. The focus on the pshicality of the relationship provides us with information that the main focus of the relationship is about the physicallity of it.

  10. The author focuses strongly on the intense relationship of Michael and Hanna as there relationship last for no longer than 3 months but takes up the first half of the novel. the novel shows a lot of the past to show how it will affect the present and all of michaels following relationships. Michael changes dramatically over the period of the relationship and helps with his confidents and self-esteem. when reading the novel and watching the movie you can see how intimite the rlationship is and how the age difference affects the situation

  11. The physical relationship is very important in respect of the novel. The whole relationship between Hana and Michael only lasted for a period of 3 months, yet an entire half of the novel represents it. This shows its importance as the rest of their lives, including the entire trial, is simply summed up. A reason for this could be that a lot of the choices, opinions and conflicts, in the lives of the characters are as of a result of their experiences earlier in life.

  12. The intensive relationship really shows how important the intense physical relationship was to the young mind of michael who had never experienced love, never mind such an advanced physical relationship for his age.

  13. It allows us to see the devlopment of Michael's self-confidence over the 1st part of the book. As the relationship develops and experiences new things so does his sociablilty with his school friends becomes a lot easier. His reltationships in the future will benefit as a result of an intensive, life learning relationship with a very experienced woman, in Hanna.

  16. Being an affair between an underaged boy and an significantly older woman, the original reaction from part 1 is quite a shock. While part 1 focuses mainly on the interaction between Hanna and Michael, the underlying structure of the relationship is very important. Michael is able to experience sex for the first time, which although is illegal, teaches him about woman and how to interact with them. This benefits his social life, however, there are also many negatives to this relationship which makes it unhealthy. Hanna does not take Michael's emotional state as a teenage male into consideration, which suggests that although Hanna may care for Michael, she uses him for her satisfaction more than anything else. As with any teenage male, of course Michael is enjoying the physical aspect, but this could really damage him later on when he wants to form a meaningful relationship but cant because of the nature of the relationship he had with Hanna.

  17. I believe that the intense relationship gives the rest of the novel in the next two parts more impact and emotional charge. It is only because the writer makes this relationship so intense that the rest of the novel is as emotional and the end as life changing as it is. The entire novel is based on the relationship between the two main characters and if the relationship is not as intense, the rest of the character motives would not make sense. I think that the relationship is therefore justified, even if it may not be morally correct.

  18. the big guy says...

it shows the passion and intensity that the author needs to portray in order to get his point across. so everyone that is taking offense to these supposed 'extremely explicit scenes' must try and understand the point the author is trying to get across. kthanksbye

  24. I Found the nature of the relationship slightly strange (like Nic Finn) but the book is obviously different from the movie in that is is far less graphic. The emphasis of the physical intimacy is constantly repeated, and it gives the impression their relationship is mostly based on sex.

  27. my first reaction to the intense physical relationship between hanna and micheal is one of shock. i was was wondering y would a woman of her age want to associate herself with a boy of micheals age. there desription of the relationship is quite graphic but it also gives us some insight into the type of relationship they have together. it also gives you some background knowledge for when you get to the second part of the book. the realtionship micheal has with hana has a prefound impact on him for the rest of his life and is an integral part of the book .......

  29. The relationship between Hanna and Micheal is quite intense during the four months that they are together. The relationship helps Micheal with his self-esteem and confidence. However it also helps Hanna as well. The most interesting part is that Hanna helped Micheal with his relationships with other people but when he got into a married relationship he could not forget her and his relationship failed.why?
